They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

They talked to one another about it. They said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why did you not believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

信子的人有永生；不信子的人得不到永生，上帝的烈怒常在他身上。」

我看見了，便做見證，祂就是上帝的兒子。」

於是門徒來見約翰，說：「老師，你看，以前在約旦河對岸和你在一起、你為祂做見證的那位在給人施洗，眾人都去祂那裡了！」

約翰為祂做見證的時候，高聲喊道：「這就是我以前所說的那位，『祂在我以後來卻比我位分高，因為祂在我之前已經存在了。』」從祂的豐盛裡，我們一次又一次地領受了恩典。因為律法是藉著摩西頒佈的，恩典和真理是藉著耶穌基督賜下來的。從來沒有人見過上帝，只有父懷中的獨一上帝把祂顯明出來。

你們曾派人到約翰那裡，他為真理做過見證。其實我並不需要人的見證，我之所以提起這些事是為了使你們得救。約翰是一盞點亮的明燈，你們情願暫時享受他的光。

約翰在工作快要完成的時候說，『你們以為我是誰？我不是基督。在我之後來的那位，我連給祂解鞋帶也不配。』

這就是我以前所說的那位，『有一個人在我以後來卻比我位分高，因為祂在我之前已經存在了。』
