They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Why didn’t you believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

And they came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified— behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying,“ This was He of whom I said,‘ He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved.He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.

And as John was finishing his course, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’

This is He of whom I said,‘ After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’
