They came and* said to Him,“ Teacher, we know that You are truthful and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God in truth. Is it permissible to pay a poll tax to Caesar, or not?Are we to pay, or not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them,“ Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at.”And they brought one. And He* said to them,“ Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to Him,“ Caesar’s.”And Jesus said to them,“ Pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at Him.

There also were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.

Tell us then, what do You think? Is it permissible to pay a poll tax to Caesar, or not?”But Jesus perceived their malice, and said,“ Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?Show Me the coin used for the poll tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.And He* said to them,“ Whose image and inscription is this?”They* said to Him,“ Caesar’s.” Then He* said to them,“ Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.”

He* said,“ Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying,“ What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll tax, from their sons or from strangers?”

After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.

you shall in fact appoint a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses. One from among your countrymen you shall appoint as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves, anyone who is not your countryman.

And its abundant produce is for the kings Whom You have set over us because of our sins; They also rule over our bodies And over our cattle as they please, So we are in great distress.

Since the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt, and because of our wrongful deeds we, our kings, and our priests have been handed over to the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to open shame, as it is this day.

Now let it be known to the king, that if that city is rebuilt and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, custom tax, or toll, and it will be detrimental to the revenue of the kings.

And a decree has been issued by me, and a search has been conducted and it has been discovered that that city has risen up against the kings in past days, and that rebellion and revolt have been perpetrated in it,that mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem, governing all the provinces beyond the Euphrates River, and that tribute, custom tax, and toll were paid to them.Now issue a decree to make those men stop work, so that this city will not be rebuilt until a decree is issued by me.And beware of being negligent in carrying out this matter; why should there be great damage, to the detriment of the kings?”
