When the leading priests and teachers of religious law heard what Jesus had done, they began planning how to kill him. But they were afraid of him because the people were so amazed at his teaching.

Again they entered Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking through the Temple area, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders came up to him.They demanded,“ By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right to do them?”“ I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question,” Jesus replied.“ Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human? Answer me!”They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.But do we dare say it was merely human?” For they were afraid of what the people would do, because everyone believed that John was a prophet.So they finally replied,“ We don’t know.” And Jesus responded,“ Then I won’t tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him.

It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

Jesus replied,“ Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the people gather. I have not spoken in secret.

At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest,plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

Moses gave you the law, but none of you obeys it! In fact, you are trying to kill me.”

The religious leaders wanted to arrest Jesus because they realized he was telling the story against them— they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

Once again they tried to arrest him, but he got away and left them.

Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.

So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other,“ What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?”Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.

Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message.I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.”“ Our father is Abraham!” they declared.“ No,” Jesus replied,“ for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example.Instead, you are trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.

When Jesus returned to the Temple and began teaching, the leading priests and elders came up to him. They demanded,“ By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?”
