But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but was beating his chest, saying,‘ God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’

And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying,‘ God, be merciful to me a sinner!’

But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be thou merciful to me a sinner.

“ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying,‘ God, turn Your wrath from me— a sinner!’

I prayed,“ O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God! For our iniquities have climbed higher than our heads, and our guilt extends to the heavens.

If we say we do not bear the guilt of sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us.

This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance:“ Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”– and I am the worst of them!

And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.

Now when they heard this, they were acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,“ What should we do, brothers?”

But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

I said,“ Too bad for me! I am destroyed, for my lips are contaminated by sin, and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. My eyes have seen the king, the LORD who commands armies.”

You assist those who delight in doing what is right, who observe your commandments. Look, you were angry because we violated them continually. How then can we be saved?We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in your sight. We all wither like a leaf; our sins carry us away like the wind.

Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.

As for me, I said:“ O LORD, have mercy on me! Heal me, for I have sinned against you!

But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and merciful God. You are patient and demonstrate great loyal love and faithfulness.Turn toward me and have mercy on me! Give your servant your strength! Deliver your slave!

So Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him,“ Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.That is why I did not presume to come to you. Instead, say the word, and my servant must be healed.

Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes!

“ For I will be merciful toward their evil deeds, and their sins I will remember no longer.”

I will get up and go to my father and say to him,“ Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired workers.”’So he got up and went to his father. We are ashamed and humiliated because of the disgraceful things we did previously.’

But the other rebuked him, saying,“ Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?And we rightly so, for we are getting what we deserve for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.”Then he said,“ Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.”And Jesus said to him,“ I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying,“ Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!”

Then you will remember, be ashamed, and remain silent when I make atonement for all you have done, declares the sovereign LORD.’”

Come, let’s consider your options,” says the LORD.“ Though your sins have stained you like the color red, you can become white like snow; though they are as easy to see as the color scarlet, you can become white like wool.

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your loyal love! Because of your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts!Wash away my wrongdoing! Cleanse me of my sin!For I am aware of my rebellious acts; I am forever conscious of my sin.

For see what this very thing, this sadness as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, what punishment! In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

For innumerable dangers surround me. My sins overtake me so I am unable to see; they outnumber the hairs of my head so my strength fails me.

He did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had done. Amon was guilty of great sin.

May I experience your loyal love, O LORD, and your deliverance, as you promised.

Listen attentively, my God, and hear! Open your eyes and look on our desolated ruins and the city called by your name. For it is not because of our own righteous deeds that we are praying to you, but because your compassion is abundant.O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, pay attention, and act! Don’t delay, for your own sake, O my God! For your city and your people are called by your name.”

we have sinned! We have done what is wrong and wicked; we have rebelled by turning away from your commandments and standards.

Go and learn what this saying means:‘ I want mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong, we have done evil.

O Israel, hope in the LORD, for the LORD exhibits loyal love, and is more than willing to deliver.

If you, O LORD, were to keep track of sins, O Lord, who could stand before you?But you are willing to forgive, so that you might be honored.

“ You are righteous, O Lord, but we are humiliated this day– the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far away in all the countries in which you have scattered them, because they have behaved unfaithfully toward you.O LORD, we have been humiliated– our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors– because we have sinned against you.Yet the Lord our God is compassionate and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.We have not obeyed the LORD our God by living according to his laws that he set before us through his servants the prophets.“ All Israel has broken your law and turned away by not obeying you. Therefore you have poured out on us the judgment solemnly threatened in the law of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against you.

As he was entering a village, ten men with leprosy met him. They stood at a distance,

Do not hold against me the sins of my youth or my rebellious acts! Because you are faithful to me, extend to me your favor, O LORD!

In his pain Manasseh asked the LORD his God for mercy and truly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.When he prayed to the LORD, the LORD responded to him and answered favorably his cry for mercy. The LORD brought him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. Then Manasseh realized that the LORD is the true God.

For the sake of your reputation, O LORD, forgive my sin, because it is great.

Now the law came in so that the transgression may increase, but where sin increased, grace multiplied all the more,so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Annals of the Prophets include his prayer, give an account of how the LORD responded to it, record all his sins and unfaithful acts, and identify the sites where he built high places and erected Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself.
