Then Levi gave a huge banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.But the Pharisees and their teachers of the law complained to Jesus’ disciples. They said,“ Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”Jesus answered them,“ Healthy people don’t need a doctor. Sick people do.I have not come to get those who think they are right with God to follow me. I have come to get sinners to turn away from their sins.”

Later Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house. Many tax collectors and sinners came. They ate with Jesus and his disciples.The Pharisees saw this. So they asked the disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”Jesus heard this. So he said,“ Those who are healthy don’t need a doctor. Sick people do.Go and learn what this means,‘ I want mercy and not sacrifice.’( Hosea 6:6) I have not come to get those who think they are right with God to follow me. I have come to get sinners to follow me.”

But suppose a sinful person turns away from the evil things they have done. And they do what is fair and right. Then they will save their life.

“ What do you think about this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’“‘ I will not,’ the son answered. But later he changed his mind and went.“ Then the father went to the other son. He said the same thing. The son answered,‘ I will, sir.’ But he did not go.“ Which of the two sons did what his father wanted?”“ The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them,“ What I’m about to tell you is true. Tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom of God ahead of you.

All the people who heard Jesus’ words agreed that God’s way was right. Even the tax collectors agreed. These people had all been baptized by John.

The law was given so that sin would increase. But where sin increased, God’s grace increased even more.

Then the last will be first. And the first will be last.”
