In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.

“ Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. InterludeThe righteous will see it and be amazed. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.

Don’t make your living by extortion or put your hope in stealing. And if your wealth increases, don’t make it the center of your life.

She glorified herself and lived in luxury, so match it now with torment and sorrow. She boasted in her heart,‘ I am queen on my throne. I am no helpless widow, and I have no reason to mourn.’

In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success.

“ How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble!

The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.

The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you have eaten your fill in this land,be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.

What sorrow for you who buy up house after house and field after field, until everyone is evicted and you live alone in the land.

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

“ Have I put my trust in money or felt secure because of my gold?Have I gloated about my wealth and all that I own?

They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.

Jesus said,“ There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.

But the widow who lives only for pleasure is spiritually dead even while she lives.

You push away every thought of coming disaster, but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer.How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds and lounge on your couches, eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock and of choice calves fattened in the stall.You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David.You drink wine by the bowlful and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions. You care nothing about the ruin of your nation.

You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy— their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you.Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth eaten rags.Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment.

But instead, you dance and play; you slaughter cattle and kill sheep. You feast on meat and drink wine. You say,“ Let’s feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

Israel boasts,“ I am rich! I’ve made a fortune all by myself! No one has caught me cheating! My record is spotless!”

They let their children frisk about like lambs. Their little ones skip and dance.They sing with tambourine and harp. They celebrate to the sound of the flute.They spend their days in prosperity, then go down to the grave in peace.

“ Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,

For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in,and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful!Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.

Why should I fear when trouble comes, when enemies surround me?They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God.Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enoughto live forever and never see the grave.Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind.The grave is their eternal home, where they will stay forever.
