Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood. And follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things.

Come now, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. For you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.Instead, you ought to say,“ If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”

Woe to those who rise early in the morning so that they may pursue intoxicating drink, Who stay up late in the evening so that wine may inflame them!

When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

“ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

But God will break you down forever; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent, And uproot you from the land of the living. SelahThe righteous will see and fear, And they will laugh at him, saying,“ Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, But trusted in the abundance of his riches And was strong in his evil desire.”

whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who have their minds on earthly things.

You have lived for pleasure on the earth and lived luxuriously; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

Do not trust in oppression, And do not vainly rely on robbery; If wealth increases, do not set your heart on it.

Woe to those who attach house to house and join field to field, Until there is no more room, And you alone are a landowner in the midst of the land!

Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.

“ If I have put my confidence in gold, And called fine gold my trust,If I have gloated because my wealth was great, And because my hand had obtained so much;

treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

“ Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, enjoying himself in splendor every day.

But she who indulges herself in luxury is dead, even while she lives.

Are you postponing the day of disaster, And would you bring near the seat of violence?Those who lie on beds of ivory, And lounge around on their couches, And eat lambs from the flock, And calves from the midst of the fattened cattle,Who improvise to the sound of the harp, And like David have composed songs for themselves,Who drink wine from sacred bowls While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils— Yet they have not grieved over the collapse of Joseph.

For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of indecent behavior, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries.

Come now, you rich people, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth eaten.Your gold and your silver have corroded, and their corrosion will serve as a testimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!

Instead, there is joy and jubilation, Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, Eating of meat and drinking of wine:“ Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”

They send out their boys like the flock, And their children dance.They sing with the tambourine and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the flute.They spend their days in prosperity, And suddenly they go down to Sheol.

“ But be on your guard, so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that this day will not come on you suddenly, like a trap;

otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, and you build good houses and live in them,and when your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have increases,then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;

Why should I fear in days of adversity, When the injustice of those who betray me surrounds me,Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches?No one can by any means redeem another Or give God a ransom for him—For the redemption of his soul is priceless, And he should cease imagining forever—That he might live on eternally, That he might not undergo decay.For he sees that even wise people die; The foolish and the stupid alike perish And leave their wealth to others.Their inner thought is that their houses are forever And their dwelling places to all generations; They have named their lands after their own names.But man in his splendor will not endure; He is like the animals that perish.This is the way of those who are foolish, And of those after them who approve their words.
