那時上帝的靈覆被在祭司耶何耶大的兒子撒迦利亞身上，撒迦利亞就站在比人民高的地方，對他們說：『上帝這麼說：「你們為甚麼越犯了永恆主的誡命，以致不能順利呢？因為你們離棄了永恆主，永恆主也離棄你們。」』眾民陰謀要害撒迦利亞，就照王所吩咐的在永恆主之殿的院子、扔石頭把他砍死。這樣、約阿施王不想念撒迦利亞的父親耶何耶大怎樣以忠愛待他本人，反而殺了他的兒子。撒迦利亞臨死的時候說：『願永恆主察看而討罰！』

因着信、亞伯供獻了祭物與上帝、比該隱所供獻的美好，就藉着信得了讚許的證言稱他為義；上帝對他的禮物作證了，因此他死了、還藉着信而說話。

不像該隱；出於那邪惡者、而屠殺了他的兄弟。為甚麼屠殺他呢？因為他自己的行為邪惡，而他兄弟的行為卻是正義。

該隱對他的兄弟亞伯說：『我們出去到田間吧。』二人正在田間，該隱就起來打他的兄弟亞伯，把他殺了。永恆主對該隱說：『你兄弟亞伯在哪裏？』他說：『我不知道。我，我哪是看守我兄弟的呢？』永恆主說：『你幹了甚麼事？你兄弟的血有聲音從地裏向我哀叫呢。地開了口，從你手裏收取了你兄弟的血了；如今你，你是受咒詛、須離開這地的。

叫流在地上的義血都歸到你們身上，從義人亞伯的血起，直到巴拉加兒子撒迦利亞的血為止；他就是你們在殿堂和祭壇間所殺害的。

大利烏二年八月、永恆主的話傳與易多的孫子比利家的兒子神言人撒迦利亞、說：
