This is what God in his wisdom said about you:‘ I will send prophets and apostles to them, but they will kill some and persecute the others.’

Because of this, God in his wisdom said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’

God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.

In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise.Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair.These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young.Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidanceby exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles.

Even those closest to you— your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends— will betray you. They will even kill some of you.And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.

About that time King Herod Agrippa began to persecute some believers in the church.He had the apostle James( John’s brother) killed with a sword.

Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. So he went to the high priest.He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them— both men and women— back to Jerusalem in chains.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere— in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

And I was in complete agreement when your witness Stephen was killed. I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned him.’

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.

Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns.She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table.She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city.

It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem:‘ There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’

For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.

But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at himand dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.As they stoned him, Stephen prayed,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”He fell to his knees, shouting,“ Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.Saul was one of the witnesses, and he agreed completely with the killing of Stephen. A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem; and all the believers except the apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria.

Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty nine lashes.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.

Listen as Wisdom calls out! Hear as understanding raises her voice!On the hilltop along the road, she takes her stand at the crossroads.By the gates at the entrance to the town, on the road leading in, she cries aloud,“ I call to you, to all of you! I raise my voice to all people.You simple people, use good judgment. You foolish people, show some understanding.Listen to me! For I have important things to tell you. Everything I say is right,for I speak the truth and detest every kind of deception.My advice is wholesome. There is nothing devious or crooked in it.My words are plain to anyone with understanding, clear to those with knowledge.Choose my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.For wisdom is far more valuable than rubies. Nothing you desire can compare with it.“ I, Wisdom, live together with good judgment. I know where to discover knowledge and discernment.

And I persecuted the followers of the Way, hounding some to death, arresting both men and women and throwing them in prison.The high priest and the whole council of elders can testify that this is so. For I received letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the followers of the Way from there to Jerusalem, in chains, to be punished.

Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.

“ Therefore, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers of religious law. But you will kill some by crucifixion, and you will flog others with whips in your synagogues, chasing them from city to city.As a result, you will be held responsible for the murder of all godly people of all time— from the murder of righteous Abel to the murder of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you killed in the Temple between the sanctuary and the altar.I tell you the truth, this judgment will fall on this very generation.

Indeed, I did just that in Jerusalem. Authorized by the leading priests, I caused many believers there to be sent to prison. And I cast my vote against them when they were condemned to death.Many times I had them punished in the synagogues to get them to curse Jesus. I was so violently opposed to them that I even chased them down in foreign cities.

But Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church. He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women to throw them into prison.
