因此天主之妙慧、曾作警言曰：「予遣先知宗徒於若輩有為所害、有為所辱、

Because of this, God in his wisdom said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’

You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake.

Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church.Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.

but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord;and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice,“ Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one.Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;

Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice?She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet.She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors:“ To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart.Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things;For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold;For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.“ I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion.

I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished.

And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them.

Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city,that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.
