“你们要提防经文士。他们喜欢穿着长袍走来走去，喜爱街市上的致敬问候，又喜爱会堂里的首位、宴席中的上座。

耶稣在他的教导中说：“你们要当心经文士们。他们喜欢穿着长袍走来走去，喜欢街市上的致敬问候，又喜欢会堂里的首位、宴席中的上座。

做任何事都不要出于争竞，也不可出于虚荣，而要以谦卑的心，各人看别人比自己强；

耶稣留意到被邀请的人怎样在那里挑选上座，就对他们讲了一个比喻说：“你被人邀请赴婚宴的时候，不要坐在上座，恐怕有比你更尊贵的人也被邀请，那邀请你们的会来对你说：‘请让座给这一位！’那时候，你就要羞惭地去坐末位了。“你被邀请的时候，要去坐在末位上，好让邀请你的人一旦来，就会对你说：‘朋友，请来上座。’那时候，你就在所有一同坐席的人面前有光彩了。因为每一个自我高举的都会被降卑；而自我降卑的都会被高举。”

破败以先，必有骄傲；绊跌之前，灵里高慢。

如果有一个戴着金戒指、穿着华丽衣服的人进了你们的会堂，又有一个穿着肮脏衣服的穷人也进来了，你们却看重那穿华丽衣服的人，对他说“请你坐在这好位子上”，而对那穷人说“你站在那里”，或说“坐在我的脚凳下边”；难道你们中间不就有了歧视，而你们也成了心怀恶念的审判官吗？
