尼尼微人信了上帝，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿着麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座上起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在爐灰中。又出通告傳遍尼尼微說：『王和大臣有諭旨說：人和牲口、牛羣羊羣、甚麼都不可嘗，草不可喫，水也不可喝。人和牲口都要披上麻布；要極力呼求上帝；各人要回轉過來、離開他的壞行徑，丟棄手中的強暴；或者上帝改變初衷，回心轉意、不發烈怒，使我們不至於滅亡，也未可知。』上帝看他們所作的，見他們回轉過來、離開他們的壞行徑，上帝對那災禍就改變心意：他說要降與他們的，如今也不降了。這事叫約拿大不高興，甚至發怒。他就禱告永恆主說：『哦永恆主啊，我還在我本地的時候、不就這樣說了麼？故此我才急速逃往他施啊；因為我知道你是有恩惠有憐憫的上帝，不輕易發怒，而有豐盛的堅愛，並且能改變心意不降所說的災禍。現在呢、永恆主啊，把我的性命取去吧！因為我死了比活着還好。』永恆主說：『你這樣發怒對不對啊？』

上帝對約拿說：『你因這棵蓖麻樹來發怒對不對啊？』他說：『我發怒到死都是對的。』

『你起來，往尼尼微那大城去，宣告警戒它的居民；因為他們的壞行為上到我面前了。』但是約拿卻起來，逃往他施去避永恆主的面；他下到約帕，遇見了一隻船要往他施；他給了船費，就下船，要和他們同往他施、去避永恆主的面。

當審判的時候、南方的女王必和這一代的人一同起來，定他們的罪；因為她從地極來、聽所羅門的智慧；但你看，有比所羅門大的在這裏呢！
