尼尼微人就相信神，并宣告禁食，无论尊贵的或卑微的，都披上麻布。这话语传到尼尼微王的时候，他从自己的宝座上起来，从身上脱下王袍，披上麻布，坐在灰烬中。然后他颁布谕令，说：“在尼尼微，王和大臣有令：‘无论人或牲畜，牛或羊，都不可尝什么，不可吃什么，也不可喝水。人和牲畜都当披上麻布；各人都当迫切地向神呼求，从自己邪恶的道路上、自己手里的残暴中转回。或许神会转回、施怜悯，从他猛烈的怒气中转回，使我们不致灭亡。’”神看到他们所行的——从邪恶的道路上转回了，神就施怜悯，没有降下原先所说的要降在他们身上的灾祸。这让约拿极其不高兴，于是他就恼火，向耶和华祷告，说：“哦，耶和华啊！难道这不就是我还在本国时所说的那样吗？这正是我事先逃往塔尔施的原因，因为我知道：你是有恩惠、有怜悯的神，不轻易发怒，并有丰盛的慈爱，而且是施怜悯不降下灾祸的那一位。耶和华啊，现在就求你取走我的性命吧！因为我死了比活着更好。”耶和华说：“你这样恼火，难道有理吗？”

神对约拿说：“你因这棵蓖麻就这样恼火，难道有理吗？”约拿说：“我恼火得要死，当然有理！”

“起来！到尼尼微大城去，向那城呼喊，因为他们的恶行已经上达我的面前。”约拿却起来，要避开耶和华的面，逃往塔尔施。他下到约帕，找到一艘去塔尔施的船，付了船费，上了船，要避开耶和华的面，与船上的人往塔尔施去。
