尼尼微人信了（“信了”或譯：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，從大到小，都穿上麻衣。這事傳到尼尼微王那裡，他就起來，離開寶座，脫去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在爐灰中。他又傳諭全尼尼微，說：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准嘗甚麼，不准吃，也不准喝。不論人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要懇切呼求神，悔改，離開惡行，摒棄手中的強暴。或者神回心轉意，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。’”神看見他們所作的，就是悔改離開惡行，神就轉意，不把所說的災禍降在他們身上了。約拿對這事非常不高興，並且發起怒來，就向耶和華禱告，說：“耶和華啊！我還在本國的時候，不是這樣說過嗎？我知道你是有恩典有憐憫的神，不輕易發怒，並且有豐盛的慈愛，轉意不降災禍，所以我才急忙逃往他施去。耶和華啊！現在求你取去我的性命吧，因為我死了比活著還好。”耶和華回答說：“你這樣發怒對不對呢？”

神問約拿：“你因這棵蓖麻這樣發怒，對不對呢？”約拿說：“我發怒以至於死都是對的。”

“起來！到尼尼微大城去，警告其中的居民，因為他們的惡行已經達到我面前。”可是約拿卻起來，要逃往他施去，躲避耶和華；他下到約帕，找到了一隻要開往他施去的船；他給了錢，就上船（“上船”原文作“下船”），要和他們同往他施去，離開耶和華。

審判的時候，南方的女王要和這世代的人一同起來，她要定他們的罪，因為她從地極來到，要聽所羅門智慧的話。你看，這裡有一位是比所羅門更大的。
