“ Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.

I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.

Do you remember what I told you?‘ A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.

“ Son of man,” he said,“ I am sending you to the nation of Israel, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been rebelling against me to this very day.They are a stubborn and hard hearted people. But I am sending you to say to them,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’And whether they listen or refuse to listen— for remember, they are rebels— at least they will know they have had a prophet among them.“ Son of man, do not fear them or their words. Don’t be afraid even though their threats surround you like nettles and briers and stinging scorpions. Do not be dismayed by their dark scowls, even though they are rebels.

“ Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.

For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.

My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!Like lions they open their jaws against me, roaring and tearing into their prey.My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me.My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet.

Its leaders are like roaring lions hunting for their victims. Its judges are like ravenous wolves at evening time, who by dawn have left no trace of their prey.

A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.

He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them— both men and women— back to Jerusalem in chains.

Snatch me from the lion’s jaws and from the horns of these wild oxen.
