One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question:“ Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

時有一經生起而試主曰：『夫子、吾何修始可獲永生乎？』

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.“ Teacher,” he asked,“ what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And behold, a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and made trial of him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Just then an expert in the law stood up to test Him, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again.One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question:“ Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”Jesus replied,“‘ You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment.A second is equally important:‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question:“ Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

Then he brought them out and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They replied,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

Someone came to Jesus with this question:“ Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”“ Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied.“ There is only One who is good. But to answer your question— if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.”“ Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied:“‘ You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.

For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise.

“ Teacher,” said an expert in religious law,“ you have insulted us, too, in what you just said.”“ Yes,” said Jesus,“ what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden.
