On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.“ Teacher,” he asked,“ what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

One day an authority on the law stood up to test Jesus.“ Teacher,” he asked,“ what must I do to receive eternal life?”

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question:“ Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying,“ Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and made trial of him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Just then an expert in the law stood up to test Him, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.And one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him:“ Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”And He said to him,“ ‘ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’This is the great and foremost commandment.The second is like it,‘ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

A ruler questioned Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

and after he brought them out, he said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They said,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

And someone came to Him and said,“ Teacher, what good thing shall I do so that I may obtain eternal life?”And He said to him,“ Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”Then he* said to Him,“ Which ones?” And Jesus said,“ You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not give false testimony;Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.

For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.

One of the lawyers* said to Him in reply,“ Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.”But He said,“ Woe to you lawyers as well! For you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
