因為施洗的約翰來了，不吃飯，不喝酒，你們說他是鬼附的。

我告訴你們，婦人所生的，沒有一個比約翰更大，然而在神的國裡最小的比他還大。”

“你要告訴以色列人，對他們說：‘無論男女，如果許了特別的願，就是拿細耳人的願，就要離俗歸耶和華。他要戒除淡酒和濃酒；淡酒作的醋和濃酒作的醋，他都不可喝；不可喝任何葡萄汁，也不可吃鮮葡萄或乾葡萄。在他離俗的日子，葡萄樹上出產的，無論是葡萄核或是葡萄皮，都不可吃。

然而，是你使我從母腹中出來的；我在母親的懷裡，你就使我有倚靠的心。

現在你要謹慎，清酒或烈酒都不可喝，各樣不潔的東西也不可吃。看哪！你必懷孕，生一個兒子；不可用剃刀剃他的頭，這孩子從在母腹開始就歸神作拿細耳人；他必拯救以色列人脫離非利士人的手。”婦人就回去，告訴她的丈夫說：“有一位神人到我這裡來，他的容貌像神使者的容貌，非常可畏，我沒有問他從哪裡來，他也沒有告訴我他的名字。

萬軍之耶和華必護衛他們，他們要用投石器投石吞滅和制伏敵人；他們必喝血，並且喧嚷，像喝醉了酒一樣；他們必像獻祭用的碗盛滿了血，又像祭壇的角，沾滿了血。

我必使你成為大國，賜福給你，使你的名為大，你也必使別人得福，

富足和尊榮都從你而來，你也統治萬有。在你的手裡有力量和權能；人的尊大、強盛都是出於你的手。

約翰是一盞點亮的燈，你們情願暫時在他的光中歡樂。

那麼，你們出去要看甚麼？先知嗎？我告訴你們，是的。他比先知重要得多了。經上所記：‘看哪，我差遣我的使者在你面前，他必在你前頭預備你的道路。’這句話是指著他說的。我實在告訴你們，婦人所生的，沒有一個比施洗的約翰更大；然而天國裡最小的比他還大。從施洗的約翰的時候直到現在，天國不斷遭受猛烈的攻擊，強暴的人企圖把它奪去。所有的先知和律法，直到約翰為止，都說了預言。如果你們肯接受，約翰就是那要來的以利亞。有耳的，就應當聽。“我要把這世代比作甚麼呢？它好像一些小孩子坐在市中心，呼叫別的小孩子，說：‘我們給你們吹笛子，你們卻不跳舞；我們唱哀歌，你們也不捶胸。’約翰來了，不吃也不喝，人說他是鬼附的；人子來了，又吃又喝，人卻說：‘你看，這人貪食好酒，與稅吏和罪人為友。’但智慧藉著它所作的，就證實是公義的了。”

彼得和十一使徒站起來，他高聲對眾人說：“猶太人和所有住在耶路撒冷的人哪，你們應當明白這件事，也應該留心聽我的話。這些人並不是照你們所想的喝醉了，現在不過是上午九點鐘罷了。這正是約珥先知所說的：‘神說：在末後的日子，我要把我的靈澆灌所有的人，你們的兒女要說預言，你們的青年人要見異象，你們的老年人要作異夢。在那些日子，我也要把我的靈澆灌我的僕人和使女，他們就要說預言。
