  • John 18:1-19
When he had said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley. There was an orchard there, and he and his disciples went into it.( Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, knew the place too, because Jesus had met there many times with his disciples.)So Judas obtained a squad of soldiers and some officers of the chief priests and Pharisees. They came to the orchard with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, because he knew everything that was going to happen to him, came and asked them,“ Who are you looking for?”They replied,“ Jesus the Nazarene.” He told them,“ I am he.”( Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.)So when Jesus said to them,“ I am he,” they retreated and fell to the ground. Then Jesus asked them again,“ Who are you looking for?” And they said,“ Jesus the Nazarene.”Jesus replied,“ I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let these men go.”He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken,“ I have not lost a single one of those whom you gave me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his right ear.( Now the slave’s name was Malchus.)But Jesus said to Peter,“ Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”Then the squad of soldiers with their commanding officer and the officers of the Jewish leaders arrested Jesus and tied him up.They brought him first to Annas, for he was the father- in- law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.( Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish leaders that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.)Simon Peter and another disciple followed them as they brought Jesus to Annas.( Now the other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.)But Simon Peter was left standing outside by the door. So the other disciple who was acquainted with the high priest came out and spoke to the slave girl who watched the door, and brought Peter inside. The girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter,“ You’re not one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” He replied,“ I am not.”( Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire they had made, warming themselves because it was cold. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.)While this was happening, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
  • Psalms 22:1-21
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away.My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up.You are holy; you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel. In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted in you and you rescued them.To you they cried out, and they were saved; in you they trusted and they were not disappointed. But I am a worm, not a man; people insult me and despise me.All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads. They say,“ Commit yourself to the LORD! Let the LORD rescue him! Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him.”Yes, you are the one who brought me out from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother’s breasts.I have been dependent on you since birth; from the time I came out of my mother’s womb you have been my God.Do not remain far away from me, for trouble is near and I have no one to help me.Many bulls surround me; powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in.They open their mouths to devour me like a roaring lion that rips its prey.My strength drains away like water; all my bones are dislocated; my heart is like wax; it melts away inside me.The roof of my mouth is as dry as a piece of pottery; my tongue sticks to my gums. You set me in the dust of death.Yes, wild dogs surround me– a gang of evil men crowd around me; like a lion they pin my hands and feet.I can count all my bones; my enemies are gloating over me in triumph. They are dividing up my clothes among themselves; they are rolling dice for my garments. But you, O LORD, do not remain far away! You are my source of strength! Hurry and help me!Deliver me from the sword! Save my life from the claws of the wild dogs!Rescue me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered me!

  • Mark 14:1-15
Two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.For they said,“ Not during the feast, so there won’t be a riot among the people.”Now while Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of costly aromatic oil from pure nard. After breaking open the jar, she poured it on his head. But some who were present indignantly said to one another,“ Why this waste of expensive ointment? It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor!” So they spoke angrily to her.But Jesus said,“ Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a good service for me.For you will always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want. But you will not always have me!She did what she could. She anointed my body beforehand for burial.I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus into their hands. When they heard this, they were delighted and promised to give him money. So Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray him.Now on the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples said to him,“ Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”He sent two of his disciples and told them,“ Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house,‘ The Teacher says,“ Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
