Oh, my anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the agony of my heart! My heart pounds within me, I cannot keep silent. For I have heard the sound of the trumpet; I have heard the battle cry.

My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes.

Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed.My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief,until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees.What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city.

Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine; racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field.With their own hands compassionate women have cooked their own children, who became their food when my people were destroyed.

Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at every street corner.“ Look, Lord, and consider: Whom have you ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring, the children they have cared for? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?

Is her King no longer there?”“ Why have they aroused my anger with their images, with their worthless foreign idols?”“ The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved.”Since my people are crushed, I am crushed; I mourn, and horror grips me.Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people.

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief.

For the time will come when you will say,‘ Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’

I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.

“ Speak this word to them:“‘ Let my eyes overflow with tears night and day without ceasing; for the Virgin Daughter, my people, has suffered a grievous wound, a crushing blow.
