Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads.

約伯站起來，撕裂外袍，剃掉頭髮，俯伏在地上敬拜，

他們遠遠地看見約伯，幾乎認不出是他，禁不住放聲大哭，各自撕裂外袍，揚起塵土，讓土落在頭上。

他們又把塵土撒在頭上，哀傷哭泣，喊著說，『這大城啊，真悲慘！真悲慘！所有經營航運的都因她的奢華而發了財，可是頃刻間她卻淪為廢墟了！』

巴拿巴和保羅見此情形，就撕裂衣服，衝進人群中，大聲喊著說：

末底改得知這事，就撕裂衣服，披上麻衣，頭蒙灰塵，在城中行走，放聲痛哭，

列陣之前，他們在耶和華面前一直哀哭到晚上。他們求問耶和華，說：「我們應該再去攻打我們的同胞便雅憫人嗎？」耶和華說：「可以去。」

摩西和亞倫就伏在地上說：「上帝啊，賜人生命的上帝啊！一人犯罪，你就要向全體會眾發怒嗎？」

當天有一個便雅憫人逃出了戰場，他撕爛衣服，頭蒙灰塵，來到示羅。

大衛為這孩子向上帝哀求，並且禁食，他進到裡面，整夜躺在地上。

以色列全軍來到伯特利，坐在耶和華面前哀哭，那天他們一直禁食到晚上，又在耶和華面前獻上燔祭和平安祭。

「你們離開這些會眾，我好在頃刻之間消滅他們。」他們二人就俯伏在地。

一聽到這些，我便撕裂衣服和外袍，拔掉頭髮和鬍鬚，驚懼地坐下。聽了以色列上帝的話而戰抖的人都聚集在我周圍，因為流亡歸來的人不忠。我驚懼地坐在那裡，直到獻晚祭的時候。獻晚祭的時候，我滿懷憂傷地起來，穿著那撕裂的衣服和外袍，雙膝跪下，向我的上帝耶和華伸出雙手，

他們因掃羅、他的兒子約拿單和耶和華的子民——以色列同胞陣亡而悲哀痛哭，禁食直到黃昏。
