Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt— all the men of military age— died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.

“兵丁从民中都灭尽死亡以后，

但被数的人中，没有一个是摩西和祭司亚伦从前在西奈的旷野所数的以色列人，因为耶和华论到他们说：“他们必要死在旷野。”所以，除了耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚以外，连一个人也没有存留。

自从离开加低斯巴尼亚，到过了撒烈溪的时候，共有三十八年，等那世代的兵丁都从营中灭尽，正如耶和华向他们所起的誓。

这些人虽看见我的荣耀和我在埃及与旷野所行的神迹，仍然试探我这十次，不听从我的话，

神四十年之久，又厌烦谁呢？岂不是那些犯罪、尸首倒在旷野的人吗？又向谁起誓，不容他们进入他的安息呢？岂不是向那些不信从的人吗？这样看来，他们不能进入安息是因为不信的缘故了。
