But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,

耶和華對亞伯蘭說：“你要離開本地、本族、父家，到我指示你的地方去。我必使你成為大國，賜福給你，使你的名為大，你也必使別人得福，給你祝福的，我必賜福給他；咒詛你的，我必咒詛他；地上的萬族，都必因你得福。”亞伯蘭就照著耶和華吩咐他的去了；羅得也和他同去。亞伯蘭離開哈蘭的時候，已經七十五歲。

司提反說：“各位父老兄弟請聽！我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕，在美索不達米亞，還沒有住在哈蘭的時候，榮耀的神向他顯現，對他說：‘你要離開本地本族，到我指示你的地方去。’

亞伯拉罕年老的時候，撒拉懷了孕，到了神應許的日期，就給亞伯拉罕生了一個兒子。亞伯拉罕給撒拉為他所生的兒子，起名叫以撒。

兒女是耶和華所賜的產業，腹中的胎兒是他的賞賜。

你是耶和華神，你揀選亞伯蘭，帶領他出了迦勒底的吾珥，改他的名字為亞伯拉罕。你見他在你面前心裡誠實可靠，就與他立約，要把迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、比利洗人、耶布斯人和革迦撒人之地，賜給他的後裔；你履行了你的諾言，因為你是公義的。

於是領他到外面去，說：“你向天觀看，數點眾星，看你能不能把它們數得清楚。”又對他說：“你的後裔將要這樣眾多。”
