他們的敵人壓迫他們，奴役他們。祂多次拯救他們，他們卻執意背叛，陷入罪中不能自拔。但祂聽見他們在苦難中呼求時，仍然眷顧他們。祂沒有忘記與他們立的約，因祂偉大無比的愛而憐憫他們。

你所到之處，我必使那裡的人惶恐不安，使你一切的仇敵都在你面前轉身逃跑。我要派黃蜂做你的先鋒，趕走那些希未人、迦南人和赫人。我不會在一年之內把這些人全部趕走，免得土地荒涼，野獸肆虐。我會逐漸地趕走他們，直到你們人丁興旺，可以佔據那片土地。我給你定下國界，從紅海到非利士海岸，從曠野到幼發拉底河。我要把其中所有的人都交在你手中，你要把他們全部趕出去。

你寄居在這裡，我必與你同在，賜福給你，因為我必把這些土地賜給你和你的後代，堅立我對你父親亞伯拉罕的誓約。我必使你的後代多如繁星，將這些土地都賜給他們，天下萬國必因你的後裔而蒙福。

你們穿過約旦河，佔領耶和華賜給你們的土地，定居下來以後，

耶和華對他說：「你要清楚知道，你的後裔必流落異鄉，被奴役、虐待四百年。但我必懲罰奴役他們的國家，之後他們必帶著大量的財物離開那裡。而你必享長壽，安然離世。到了第四代，你的子孫必重回此地，因為亞摩利人現在還沒有惡貫滿盈。」太陽下山後，大地黑暗，突然有冒煙的火爐和點著的火炬在肉塊中經過。就在那天，耶和華跟亞伯蘭立約，說：「我必將這片土地賜給你的後代，使他們得到從埃及河到幼發拉底河一帶的土地，就是基尼人、基尼洗人、甲摩尼人、赫人、比利洗人、利乏音人、亞摩利人、迦南人、革迦撒人和耶布斯人的土地。」

我下來是要從埃及人手中救他們，帶他們離開那裡，到一個遼闊肥沃的奶蜜之鄉，就是現在迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、比利洗人、希未人和耶布斯人居住的地方。

耶和華站在梯子上對雅各說：「我是耶和華，是你祖父亞伯拉罕的上帝，也是以撒的上帝。我要把你現在躺臥的地方賜給你和你的後代。你的後代必多如地上的塵沙，遍佈四方，地上萬族必因你和你的後代而蒙福。

「你們進入並佔領你們的上帝耶和華將要賜給你們的土地，安頓下來後，就會想立自己的王，像周圍的國家一樣。

耶和華向亞伯蘭顯現，對他說：「我要把這片土地賜給你的後裔。」亞伯蘭就在那裡為向他顯現的耶和華築了一座壇。

耶和華對摩西說：「這便是我向亞伯拉罕、以撒和雅各起誓要賜給他們子孫的土地。現在我讓你親眼看到了，但你不能進入。」
