因為使他們的心頑強、來對以色列人接戰的、是出於永恆主，要把他們盡行殺滅歸神，使他們不得恩待，反而被消滅掉，正如永恆主所吩咐摩西的。

因为耶和华的意思是要使他们心里刚硬，来与以色列人争战，好叫他们尽被杀灭，不蒙怜悯，正如耶和华所吩咐摩西的。

For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

永恆主對摩西說：『你回埃及去的時候，要留意將我交你手裏的一切奇事行在法老面前；我卻要使他的心頑強，他就不讓人民走。

只是永恆主你的上帝所賜給你以為業的這些別族之民的城市中、凡有氣息的、一個你也不要讓他活着；只要將他們盡行殺滅歸神，將赫人、亞摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人、都殺滅淨盡，照永恆主你的上帝所吩咐你的，

永恆主你的上帝所交給你的別族之民、你要把他們除滅掉；你的眼不可顧惜他們；你也不可事奉他們的神，因為這會餌誘你入於網羅。

這些王所有的城、和這些城所有的王、約書亞都攻取了；他用刀擊殺了他們，將他們盡行殺滅歸神，是照永恆主的僕人摩西所吩咐的。只是立在廢堆山上所有的城、除了夏瑣以外、以色列人倒沒有燒；只有夏瑣、約書亞燒了。這些城所有被掠之物和牲口。以色列人都劫為己有；只是所有的人他們都用刀擊殺，直到把他們消滅掉為止；凡有氣息的沒有剩下一個。永恆主怎樣吩咐他的僕人摩西，摩西就怎樣吩咐約書亞；約書亞也照樣行；凡永恆主所吩咐摩西的、約書亞沒有一件偏廢而不行的。

倘若上帝雖有意要證顯他的義怒，播知他的能力，卻用大恆忍寬容那應受義怒的、準備進入滅亡的、器皿，為要播知他榮耀之豐富是賜給那蒙憐憫的、那早豫備好了、可進入「榮耀」的、器皿，就怎麼樣呢？他所寬容的

然而我還讓你存立，正為的是要向你彰顯我的大能力，並傳揚我的名於全地。

但是希實本王西宏不情願容我們從他那裏經過，因為永恆主你的上帝使他的靈剛愎、心意頑固，為要將他交在你手中、像今日一樣。

我呢，你看吧，我要使埃及人的心頑強，他們就會跟着下去；我必在法老身上、在他的全軍、車輛和馬兵上得到榮耀。

他父母卻不知道這事乃出於永恆主，因為永恆主正在找機會攻擊非利士人呢。那時非利士人正管轄着以色列人。

他說：你去對這人民說：『你們聽了又聽吧！但總不明白！你們看了又看吧！但總不曉得！你去使這人民心蒙脂油，耳朵發沉，將他們的眼塗抹掉，免得他們用眼看見，用耳聽見，心裏明白，而回轉過來，而得醫治！』

永恆主說：「誰去引誘亞哈上去、倒斃在基列的拉末呢？」這個說這樣，那個說那樣。隨後有一個靈出來，站在永恆主面前、說：「我去引誘他。」永恆主問他說：「你用甚麼法子呢？」他說：「我要出去，在他的眾神言人口中做個虛假之靈。」永恆主說：「這樣你就能夠引誘，並且能成功；你出去這樣行吧。」所以現在你看，永恆主將虛假之靈放在你這些眾神言人口中了；並且在關於你的事上永恆主也說到災禍的事了。』

神言人向王說話的時候，王對他說：『我們何曾立你做參謀呢？你止住、別說吧！為甚麼硬要被打死呢？』那神言人就止住了；可又再說：『我知道上帝是定下了主意要滅絕你的，因為你行這事，不聽我給你出的主意。』

人若得罪了人，有上帝作仲裁；人若得罪了永恆主，誰能為他祈禱呢？』他們竟不聽他們父親的話，因為永恆主有意思要殺死他們。

王不聽眾民的要求，這一個事態是出於永恆主，為要實行他的話、就是由示羅人亞希雅經手論到尼八兒子耶羅波安所說過的。
