Now Adoni- Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies.

Adoni- Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni- Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.

As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,

Adoni zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured and completely destroyed Ai and killed its king, just as he had destroyed the town of Jericho and killed its king. He also learned that the Gibeonites had made peace with Israel and were now their allies.

又把城中一切所有的、不拘男女老少、牛羊和驢、全都用刀殺滅歸神。

又有撒冷王麥基洗德、帶着餅和酒也出來：他是至高者上帝的祭司。

攻取了城的人也出城迎擊艾城人；艾城人就困在以色列人中間，這邊也有，那邊也有。於是以色列人擊殺了他們，連一個殘存的或逃脫的、都沒有給他留下。連艾王、他們也活活捉住，解到約書亞那裏。以色列人殺盡了艾城所有的居民、於田間、於野外、就是他們追趕以色列人的地方；艾城人全都倒斃在刀劍之下、直到滅盡；以色列眾人就回艾城，用刀擊殺了城中的人。那一天倒斃的人、連男帶女、共有一萬二千人，就是艾城所有的人。約書亞總沒有收回伸出短槍的手，直到把艾城所有的居民盡行殺滅歸神，才把手收回來。只是城中的牲口和被掠物、以色列人倒劫為己有，是照永恆主的話、就是他所吩咐約書亞的。約書亞燒了艾城，使城永做廢堆山、一片荒涼、直到今日。又將艾王掛在示眾木上、直到晚上時候。日落時、約書亞吩咐，人就把屍體從示眾木上取下來，丟在城門口，又在屍體上立起一大堆石頭；那石頭到今日還在。

你怎樣處置耶利哥和耶利哥王，也要怎樣處置艾城和艾王；只是城內被掠之物和牲口、你們倒可以劫為己有；你要在城後邊設下伏兵。』

除了住基遍的希未人之外、沒有一個城跟以色列人講和的；這一切他們都在戰爭中奪取了來。因為使他們的心頑強、來對以色列人接戰的、是出於永恆主，要把他們盡行殺滅歸神，使他們不得恩待，反而被消滅掉，正如永恆主所吩咐摩西的。

於是約書亞竟跟他們講和，與他們立約，容他們活着；會眾的首領也向他們起誓。以色列人和他們立約之後、過了三天、才聽說他們是自己的近鄰，是住在自己中間的。以色列人就往前行，第三天到了他們的城市；他們的城市就是基遍、基非拉、比錄、基列耶琳。但是以色列人不擊殺他們，因為會眾的首領曾經指着永恆主以色列的上帝向他們起了誓；全會眾就向首領們發怨言。眾首領對全會眾說：『我們曾經指着永恆主以色列的上帝向他們起了誓；現在我們不能觸害他們。我們要這樣處置他們，容他們活着，免得有上帝的震怒因我們向他們起的誓、而臨到我們身上。』首領們對會眾說：『要容他們活着。』於是他們給全會眾做撿柴打水的人，正如首領們所說到他們的。約書亞把他們召了來，告訴他們說：『為甚麼你們哄騙我們說：「我們離你們很遠」，其實你們卻是住在我們中間的？現在你們是被咒詛的了；你們中間必不斷有人做奴隸、給我的上帝的殿做撿柴打水的人。』他們回答約書亞說：『因為有人確實告訴你僕人說永恆主你的上帝曾經吩咐他僕人摩西、把這遍地賜給你們，並把這地所有的居民都從你們面前消滅掉，故此我們為了你們的緣故、很怕喪命，就行了這事了。現在你看，我們都在你手中；你看怎樣處置我們為好為對，就怎樣行好啦。』於是約書亞這樣處置他們，援救他們脫離以色列人的手，以色列人就沒有殺戮他們。當那一天約書亞使他們給會眾和永恆主的祭壇、在他所要選擇的地方、做撿柴打水的人；到今日還是如此。

因為這麥基洗德、撒冷的王、至高上帝的祭司、是一直做祭司、永續不斷的。當亞伯拉罕從諸王之被擊敗回來的時候，他去迎接亞伯拉罕，給他祝福；
