Now Adoni- Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies.

Adoni- Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni- Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.

As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,

以刃盡滅城中所有之男女老幼、牛羊與驢、

撒冷王麥基洗德、為至高天主之祭司、攜餅與酒而出、

伏兵亦出邑迎擊之、艾人困於以色列人間、前後皆以色列人、以色列人殺之、無一人存留、無一人逃脫、生擒艾王、解至約書亞前、以色列人在田間、在曠野、殺滅所追艾之居民、盡亡於刃、或作艾之居民追以色列人至田野反被以色列人殺滅盡亡於刃後、以色列人返而入邑、擊之以刃、是日艾之居民俱亡、計男女一萬二千人、蓋約書亞執戈而指艾不垂其手、直至艾之居民盡滅、惟邑中牲畜貨財、皆為以色列人所取、循主諭約書亞之命、約書亞焚艾、使為瓦礫、永為荒場、至於今日、懸艾王於木、至於日暮、日入時、約書亞命取屍下木、投於邑門、屍上堆石、成為大岡、至今尚存、○

爾必待艾與其王、如昔待耶利哥與其王然、惟邑中貨財牲畜、爾可自取、當設伏兵於邑後、邑後或作邑西下同

除居基遍之希未人而外、無一邑之人、與以色列人和好、所有之邑、以色列人悉戰而取之、蓋主使其使其或作聽其剛愎厥心、與以色列人戰、而為以色列人所滅、不蒙憐恤、乃至勦除、循主諭摩西之命、

於是約書亞與之議和立約、以存其生、會眾牧伯亦與彼立誓、立約後越三日、則聞其為近鄰、居於以色列中、以色列人啟行、第三日至其邑、其邑即基遍、基非拉、比綠、基列耶琳、會中牧伯、既指主以色列之天主、與之立誓、故以色列人不擊之、會眾怨牧伯、眾牧伯謂會眾曰、我儕既指主以色列之天主、與彼立誓、則不可加害於彼、當如是待斯人、使為析薪者、汲水者、服事會眾、但當存其生、不然、恐因我儕與彼所立之誓、而主怒臨及我儕、不然恐因我儕與彼所立之誓而主怒臨及我儕或作否則背我儕與彼所立之誓恐主怒臨及我儕牧伯再謂會眾曰、當存其生、於是使彼為析新者、汲水者、服事會眾、循牧伯論彼所言、約書亞召之曰、爾實居我中、何欺我、言離此甚遠耶、緣此爾必受咒詛、爾中無一人不為奴在我天主殿中、為析薪者、汲水者、對約書亞曰、有人告僕等云、爾之天主耶和華曾諭其僕摩西、將以此全地賜爾、並於爾前將滅此地一切居民、我緣爾之故、甚畏喪命、故行此事、今我在爾手、爾所視為善為是、可行於我、爾所視為善為是可行於我或作爾欲如何待我可任爾意以行於是約書亞救之於以色列人手、禁眾勿殺之、約書亞待之如此、當日約書亞使其人為析新者、汲水者、服事會眾、亦服事主之祭臺、在主選為聖所之處、至於今日、
