亞哈聽見這話，就撕裂衣服，禁食，身穿麻布，睡臥也穿着麻布，並且緩緩而行。耶和華的話臨到提斯比人以利亞說：「亞哈在我面前這樣自卑，你看見了嗎？因他在我面前自卑，他還在世的時候，我不降這禍；到他兒子的時候，我必降這禍與他的家。」

耶和華就後悔說：「這災可以免了。」

他在人前歌唱說：我犯了罪，顛倒是非，這竟與我無益。神救贖我的靈魂免入深坑；我的生命也必見光。

我聽見以法蓮為自己悲歎說：你責罰我，我便受責罰，像不慣負軛的牛犢一樣。求你使我回轉，我便回轉，因為你是耶和華－我的神。我回轉以後就真正懊悔；受教以後就拍腿歎息；我因擔當幼年的凌辱就抱愧蒙羞。耶和華說：以法蓮是我的愛子嗎？是可喜悅的孩子嗎？我每逢責備他，仍深顧念他；所以我的心腸戀慕他；我必要憐憫他。

你們要撕裂心腸，不撕裂衣服。歸向耶和華－你們的神；因為他有恩典，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，有豐盛的慈愛，並且後悔不降所說的災。

當審判的時候，尼尼微人要起來定這世代的罪，因為尼尼微人聽了約拿所傳的就悔改了。看哪，在這裏有一人比約拿更大。」

於是起來，往他父親那裏去。相離還遠，他父親看見，就動了慈心，跑去抱着他的頸項，連連與他親嘴。

就禱告耶和華說：「耶和華啊，我在本國的時候豈不是這樣說嗎？我知道你是有恩典、有憐憫的神，不輕易發怒，有豐盛的慈愛，並且後悔不降所說的災，所以我急速逃往他施去。
