He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars.

When he tells the sun not to shine, it doesn’t. He turns off the light of the stars.

The heavens will be black above them; the stars will give no light. The sun will be dark when it rises, and the moon will provide no light.

“ And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

“ In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord,“ I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth while it is still day.

When I blot you out, I will veil the heavens and darken the stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give you its light.I will darken the bright stars overhead and cover your land in darkness. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!

“ Where does light come from, and where does darkness go?Can you take each to its home? Do you know how to get there?

“ Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him,‘ What do you mean by doing these things?’

Then everyone stops working so they can watch his power.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Lift your hand toward heaven, and the land of Egypt will be covered with a darkness so thick you can feel it.”So Moses lifted his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for three days.

“ Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east?Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth, to bring an end to the night’s wickedness?As the light approaches, the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal; it is robed in brilliant colors.The light disturbs the wicked and stops the arm that is raised in violence.

For the Lord is the one who shaped the mountains, stirs up the winds, and reveals his thoughts to mankind. He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth. The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is his name!

On the day the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said,“ Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.”
