But my brothers are as undependable as intermittent streams, as the streams that overflow

But my friends have stopped being kind to me. They are like streams that only flow for part of the year. They are like rivers that flow over their banks

My brothers are treacherous as a torrent-bed, as torrential streams that pass away,

My brothers, you have proved as unreliable as a seasonal brook that overflows its banks in the spring

My brothers are as treacherous as a wadi, as seasonal streams that overflow

My brothers have acted deceitfully like a wadi, Like the torrents of wadis which drain away,

My brothers have dealt deceitfully like a brook, Like the streams of the brooks that pass away,

My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, As the channel of brooks that pass away;

Why must I continually suffer such painful anguish? Why must I endure the sting of their insults like an incurable wound? Will you let me down when I need you like a brook one goes to for water, but that cannot be relied on?”

Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away.

Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who shared meals with me, has turned against me.

Look, a time is coming– and has come– when you will be scattered, each one to his own home, and I will be left alone. Yet I am not alone, because my Father is with me.

Indeed, it is not an enemy who insults me, or else I could bear it; it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me, or else I could hide from him.But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.We would share personal thoughts with each other; in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.

All my closest friends detest me; and those whom I love have turned against me.

These men are dangerous reefs at your love feasts, feasting without reverence, feeding only themselves. They are waterless clouds, carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit– twice dead, uprooted;

All your allies have abandoned you. They no longer have any concern for you. For I have attacked you like an enemy would. I have chastened you cruelly. For your wickedness is so great and your sin is so much.

You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; those who know me leave me alone in the darkness.

Do not rely on a friend; do not trust a companion! Don’t even share secrets with the one who lies in your arms!For a son thinks his father is a fool, a daughter challenges her mother, and a daughter-in-law her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are his own servants.

Everyone must be on his guard around his friends. He must not even trust any of his relatives. For every one of them will find some way to cheat him. And all of his friends will tell lies about him.One friend deceives another and no one tells the truth. These people have trained themselves to tell lies. They do wrong and are unable to repent.
