I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living.

Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken. Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well.For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment,

Rich and poor are both there, and the slave is free from his master.

The living at least know they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, nor are they remembered.

You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.

“‘ You formed me with your hands; you made me, yet now you completely destroy me.

All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.

Innocent or wicked, it is all the same to God. That’s why I say,‘ He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death. There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle. And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue the wicked.

A great funeral procession goes to the cemetery. Many pay their respects as the body is laid to rest, and the earth gives sweet repose.
