For if, having escaped the world’s impurity through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in these things and defeated, the last state is worse for them than the first.For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy command delivered to them.It has happened to them according to the true proverb: A dog returns to its own vomit, and,“ A washed sow returns to wallowing in the mud.”

When they came to him, he said to them,“ You know, from the first day I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time,serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and during the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews.

The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; he repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness.Indeed, I let all his ordinances guide me and have not disregarded his statutes.I was blameless toward him and kept myself from my iniquity.So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

Indeed, this is our boast: The testimony of our conscience is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with godly sincerity and purity, not by human wisdom but by God’s grace.

The words from his mouth are malicious and deceptive; he has stopped acting wisely and doing good.

and those who turn back from following the LORD, who do not seek the LORD or inquire of him.

Now you can see that the king is leading you. As for me, I’m old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have led you from my youth until now.Here I am. Bring charges against me before the LORD and his anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Who have I wronged or mistreated? Who gave me a bribe to overlook something? I will return it to you.”“ You haven’t wronged us, you haven’t mistreated us, and you haven’t taken anything from anyone,” they responded.He said to them,“ The LORD is a witness against you, and his anointed is a witness today that you haven’t found anything in my hand.”“ He is a witness,” they said.

And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing.As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit.But the seed in the good ground— these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit.

I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.You yourselves know that I worked with my own hands to support myself and those who are with me.

You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers.
