“ But when people die, their strength is gone. They breathe their last, and then where are they?

但人死亡而消灭；他气绝，竟在何处呢？

但壮士一死就消逝了；人一气绝，他在何处呢？

但壮士一死就消逝了；人一气绝，他在何处呢？

但人一死，就失去力量；人一咽气，就不知去向。

人死了，就化为乌有；人一气绝就不在了。

但人死亡而消滅；他氣絕，竟在何處呢？

人死了，就化為烏有；人一氣絕就不在了。

惟人死而僵、其氣既絕、則安在哉、

人則異是、始則血衰、既而氣絕、歸於無有。

惟人死則滅、人氣絕則安在、

But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more.

No man is like that. When he dies, he is buried in a grave. He takes his last breath. Then he is gone.

But a person dies and fades away; he breathes his last— where is he?

But a man dies and lies prostrate. A person passes away, and where is he?

people are laid to rest and do not rise again. Until the heavens are no more, they will not wake up nor be roused from their sleep.

O God, remember that my life is but a breath, and I will never again feel happiness.You see me now, but not for long. You will look for me, but I will be gone.Just as a cloud dissipates and vanishes, those who die will not come back.They are gone forever from their home— never to be seen again.

“‘ Why, then, did you deliver me from my mother’s womb? Why didn’t you let me die at birth?

“ Why wasn’t I born dead? Why didn’t I die as I came from the womb?

And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God!

Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit.

But the wicked will be blinded. They will have no escape. Their only hope is death.”

Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

What if I go to the grave and make my bed in darkness?What if I call the grave my father, and the maggot my mother or my sister?Where then is my hope? Can anyone find it?No, my hope will go down with me to the grave. We will rest together in the dust!”

The wicked are crushed by disaster, but the godly have a refuge when they die.

“ Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried,and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.

When Jacob had finished this charge to his sons, he drew his feet into the bed, breathed his last, and joined his ancestors in death.
