We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.

“ When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord.

For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life?Will God listen to their cry when trouble comes upon them?

The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth.

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.

Therefore, I will respond in fury. I will neither pity nor spare them. And though they cry for mercy, I will not listen.”

If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me.

Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am going to bring calamity upon them, and they will not escape. Though they beg for mercy, I will not listen to their cries.

When they fast, I will pay no attention. When they present their burnt offerings and grain offerings to me, I will not accept them. Instead, I will devour them with war, famine, and disease.”

They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer.

Then the Lord said to me,“ Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me pleading for these people, I wouldn’t help them. Away with them! Get them out of my sight!

And when they cry out, God does not answer because of their pride.

So he declared he would destroy them. But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the Lord and the people. He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them.

Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.

Then when you call, the Lord will answer.‘ Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.“ Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!

So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said,“ Father, thank you for hearing me.You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.”

Then Elijah cried out to the Lord,“ O Lord my God, why have you brought tragedy to this widow who has opened her home to me, causing her son to die?”And he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the Lord,“ O Lord my God, please let this child’s life return to him.”The Lord heard Elijah’s prayer, and the life of the child returned, and he revived!

Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years!Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.

Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, for he is a prophet. Then you will live. But if you don’t return her to him, you can be sure that you and all your people will die.”

But God had listened to Abraham’s request and kept Lot safe, removing him from the disaster that engulfed the cities on the plain.

Then King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to God in heaven.And the Lord sent an angel who destroyed the Assyrian army with all its commanders and officers. So Sennacherib was forced to return home in disgrace to his own land. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons killed him there with a sword.

Then Jesus explained:“ My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.

Abraham approached him and said,“ Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked?Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city— will you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes?Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”And the Lord replied,“ If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.”Then Abraham spoke again.“ Since I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.Suppose there are only forty five righteous people rather than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And the Lord said,“ I will not destroy it if I find forty five righteous people there.”Then Abraham pressed his request further.“ Suppose there are only forty?” And the Lord replied,“ I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.”“ Please don’t be angry, my Lord,” Abraham pleaded.“ Let me speak— suppose only thirty righteous people are found?” And the Lord replied,“ I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”Then Abraham said,“ Since I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continue— suppose there are only twenty?” And the Lord replied,“ Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”Finally, Abraham said,“ Lord, please don’t be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?” And the Lord replied,“ Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”When the Lord had finished his conversation with Abraham, he went on his way, and Abraham returned to his tent.

Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also called on his name. They cried to the Lord for help, and he answered them.

So take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer on your behalf. I will not treat you as you deserve, for you have not spoken accurately about me, as my servant Job has.”

At the usual time for offering the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet walked up to the altar and prayed,“ O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant. Prove that I have done all this at your command.O Lord, answer me! Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to yourself.”Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench!

I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”

Then I said,‘ Look, I have come to do your will, O God— as is written about me in the Scriptures.’”
