Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his time had not yet come.

Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.

Jesus called his disciples to him and said,“ I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions.

The leading priests picked up the coins.“ It wouldn’t be right to put this money in the Temple treasury,” they said,“ since it was payment for murder.”

Once again they tried to arrest him, but he got away and left them.

Some even wanted him arrested, but no one laid a hand on him.

At that time some Pharisees said to him,“ Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”Jesus replied,“ Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!

Jesus replied,“ There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.”

The four chief gatekeepers, all Levites, were trusted officials, for they were responsible for the rooms and treasuries at the house of God.

At that point they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden from them and left the Temple.

The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them— they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the people’s reaction.
