Ruth 1:11-18
But Naomi replied,“ Return home, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Am I able to have any more sons who could become your husbands?Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me to have a husband tonight and to bear sons, would you be willing to wait for them to grow up? Would you restrain yourselves from remarrying? No, my daughters, my life is much too bitter for you to share, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me.”Again they wept loudly, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.Naomi said,“ Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”But Ruth replied: Do not persuade me to leave you or go back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh punish me, and do so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped trying to persuade her.

Joshua 24:15-22
But if it doesn’t please you to worship Yahweh, choose for yourselves today the one you will worship: the gods your fathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my family, we will worship Yahweh.”The people replied,“ We will certainly not abandon the Lord to worship other gods! For the Lord our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us all along the way we went and among all the peoples whose lands we traveled through. The Lord drove out before us all the peoples, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will worship the Lord, because He is our God.”But Joshua told the people,“ You will not be able to worship Yahweh, because He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not remove your transgressions and sins.If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, He will turn against you, harm you, and completely destroy you, after He has been good to you.”“ No!” the people answered Joshua.“ We will worship the Lord.”Joshua then told the people,“ You are witnesses against yourselves that you yourselves have chosen to worship Yahweh.”“ We are witnesses,” they said.

The king said to Ittai the Gittite,“ Why are you also going with us? Go back and stay with the new king since you’re both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.Besides, you only arrived yesterday; should I make you wander around with us today while I go wherever I can? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the Lord show you kindness and faithfulness.”

Luke 14:25-33
Now great crowds were traveling with Him. So He turned and said to them:“ If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters— yes, and even his own life— he cannot be My disciple.Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.“ For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him, saying,‘ This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’“ Or what king, going to war against another king, will not first sit down and decide if he is able with 10,000 to oppose the one who comes against him with 20,000?If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not say good-bye to all his possessions cannot be My disciple.
