Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant.“ How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves,“ How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Some of the Pharisees said,“ This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.” Others said,“ But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them.

Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said,“ I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

“ How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.

When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said,“ We want to hear more about this later.”

But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

“ What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus.“ How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared,“ Surely this man is the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”Others said,“ He is the Messiah.” Still others said,“ But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.”So the crowd was divided about him.

“ But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said,“ and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?
