為諸事作證、而筆之於書者、即為斯徒。吾人固知其所證之誠實無妄也。

吾人所言者、乃元始生命之道、而亦吾人所曾耳濡目染、躬自瞻仰、親受撫摩者也。此無始無終、向與聖父相俱之生命、曾現身於世。其在世時、吾人既得親炙、爰為作證、而宣之於爾。吾人茲以所見所聞、傳之於爾、庶幾爾曹得與吾人神交心契、而吾人實已與聖父及其聖子耶穌基督神交心契矣。

爾等素從予遊、亦當為予作證也。

我乃一長老也、曾目擊基督之受苦蒙難、且於來日將顯之光榮、預有其分焉。吾欲憑此資格、為爾中任長老者進一言。

凡經所載、皆以訓我、欲使我因研經而習忍耐、而得安慰、而修望德。

況辜負偌大之救恩、其能僥倖於萬一耶？此救恩自始為主所親傳、而親炙之者又為吾人闡述、鑿鑿有據；且天主更按聖意、疊用異兆靈異、廣施聖蹟、及聖神之妙果、為之證明；不亦信而有徵乎？

凡彼在猶太國及耶路撒冷之所行、吾人實為之證；而人竟懸之於木而殺之。

惟書此數事、庶幾爾等篤信耶穌即是基督、天主聖子。爾等既能篤信、必得仰賴厥名以獲永生。

然予之言此、乃欲使環立於斯之眾庶、篤信父之遣予耳。』

耶穌見聖母及愛徒並立、乃謂聖母曰：『夫人、此爾子也！』

予不第為彼等求、亦為耹彼等之言、而置信於予者求焉。願彼眾能翕然合而為一；正如吾父體予、予體吾父、願彼眾亦能仰體吾儕、而融為一體、庶幾世人信父實曾遣予。

予此次不在彼處、實足為爾等慶、所以建爾等之信德也。且偕予往！』

今事猶未成、先以告爾、俾事成而信彌篤。
