由是彼拉多思何以釋之、猶太人呼曰、爾釋斯人、非忠於該撒、凡擅謂為王者、叛該撒也、

是後、彼拉多欲釋之、猶太人呼曰、自謂王者叛該撒若釋此人、則不臣該撒、○

此後比辣多更圖釋之；詎猶太人疾呼曰：『爾釋此人、則不得為凱撒友矣！凡自稱為王者、即與凱撒為敵者也。』

From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying,“ If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Cæsar’s friend: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

彼拉多回到總督府提審耶穌，問道：「你是猶太人的王嗎？」耶穌回答說：「你這樣問是你自己的意思還是聽別人說的？」彼拉多說：「難道我是猶太人嗎？是你們猶太人和祭司長把你送來的。你到底犯了什麼罪？」耶穌答道：「我的國不屬於這個世界，如果我的國屬於這個世界，我的臣僕早就起來爭戰了，我也不會被交在猶太人的手裡。但我的國不屬於這個世界。」

幾天後，腓利斯和他的妻子猶太人土西拉一同來了，召見保羅，聽他講信基督耶穌的事。當保羅講到公義、節制和將來的審判時，腓利斯十分恐懼，說：「你先下去吧，改天有機會，我再叫你來。」腓利斯希望保羅賄賂他，所以經常召他來談話。過了兩年，波求·非斯都接任總督，腓利斯為了討好猶太人，仍然把保羅留在監裡。

指控祂說：「這人蠱惑民心，禁止百姓向凱撒納稅，又說自己是基督，是君王。」彼拉多問耶穌：「你是猶太人的王嗎？」耶穌回答說：「如你所言。」彼拉多轉過身來，對祭司長和百姓宣佈：「我查不出這人有什麼罪。」但他們堅持說：「這個人從加利利開始一直到這裡，在猶太地區四處傳道，煽動民心。」

他們找不到保羅和西拉，就把耶孫和幾個弟兄拉到當地官員面前，高喊：「那些攪亂天下的人到我們這裡來了，耶孫接待了他們。他們違抗凱撒的命令，說另有一個王叫耶穌。」

希律聽到這些議論，就說：「祂一定是被我斬了頭的約翰從死裡復活了。」原來希律娶了他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底，並為她的緣故而派人逮捕了約翰，把他關押在監牢裡。因為約翰屢次對希律說：「你娶弟弟的妻子不合法。」希羅底對約翰懷恨在心，想要殺掉他，只是不能得逞。因為希律知道約翰是個公義聖潔的人，所以敬畏他，並對他加以保護。儘管約翰所講的道理令他困惑不安，他仍然喜歡聽。機會終於來了。希律在自己的生日那天設宴招待文武百官和加利利的顯要。希羅底的女兒進來跳舞，甚得希律和客人的歡心。王對她說：「你想要什麼，只管說。」王還對她起誓說：「無論你要什麼，哪怕是我的半壁江山，我都會給你。」她便出去問她母親：「我應該要什麼呢？」她母親說：「要施洗者約翰的頭！」她馬上回去對王說：「願王立刻把施洗者約翰的頭放在盤子裡送給我。」王聽了這個請求，感到十分為難，但因為在賓客面前起了誓言，就不好拒絕。
