每屆盛節、方伯徇民之請、例釋一囚。時有著名囚犯曰巴辣巴。眾人既集、比辣多問曰：『爾欲誰釋、巴辣巴乎？抑號稱基督之耶穌乎？』方伯固知若輩之解送耶穌、純出嫉妒耳。

惟司祭長耆老輩、則唆眾求釋巴辣巴、而殺耶穌。方伯又問眾曰：『二者中欲釋誰？』眾曰：『巴辣巴。』曰：『然則號稱基督之耶穌：將何以處之。』眾呼曰：『釘之十字架！』曰：『異哉、彼曾犯何罪？』眾大呼曰：『釘之十字架！』

依例方伯每屆盛節、必徇民之請、釋囚一。時有巴辣巴者與興亂殺人者同繫。眾援例請釋一囚、比辣多應曰：『欲我為爾等釋「猶太人之王」乎？』蓋彼已悟大司祭輩之控耶穌、純出嫉妒也。若輩乃復唆眾、請釋巴辣巴。比辣多復詢曰：『然則爾所稱為「猶太人之王」者、將何以處之？』眾高聲呼曰：『釘死之！』比辣多曰：『是亦何為！彼曾作何惡？』眾更竭聲而呼曰：『釘死之！』

吾將責而釋之。』每屆斯節、例釋一囚。眾齊呼曰：『願去此人、而釋巴拉巴。』巴拉巴者、城中作亂殺人、而下獄者也。比辣多欲釋耶穌、復向眾言之、而眾又呼曰：『釘之十字架！釘之十字架！』比辣多三次謂眾曰：『斯亦異矣！此人曾犯何罪？吾實未見其有可死之道也、是當責而釋之。』眾更呶呶不休、厲聲要求釘之於十字架上。聲勢洶洶、難以理喻。
