And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

( When he said“ living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.

So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me?

When you ascended to the heights, you led a crowd of captives. You received gifts from the people, even from those who rebelled against you. Now the Lord God will live among us there.

You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Then Peter replied,“ I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.

“ And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am.

When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them,“ Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

That is why the Scriptures say,“ When he ascended to the heights, he led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to his people.”Notice that it says“ he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world.And the same one who descended is the one who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that he might fill the entire universe with himself.Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God.”
