and people are terrified. Pangs of anguish grip them, like those of a woman in labor. They look helplessly at one another, their faces aflame with fear.

Then he said to the woman,“ I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.”

As Isaiah said,“ Rejoice, O childless woman, you who have never given birth! Break into a joyful shout, you who have never been in labor! For the desolate woman now has more children than the woman who lives with her husband!”

He gives the childless woman a family, making her a happy mother. Praise the Lord!

Pain has come to the people like the pain of childbirth, but they are like a child who resists being born. The moment of birth has arrived, but they stay in the womb!“ Should I ransom them from the grave? Should I redeem them from death? O death, bring on your terrors! O grave, bring on your plagues! For I will not take pity on them.

And Sarah declared,“ God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age!”

She became pregnant and gave birth to a son.“ God has removed my disgrace,” she said.And she named him Joseph, for she said,“ May the Lord add yet another son to my family.”

Lord, in distress we searched for you. We have not given salvation to the earth, nor brought life into the world.
