Many of them said,“ He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?”

Some said,“ He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”

“ You are controlled by demons,” the crowd answered.“ Who is trying to kill you?”

Then they cried out,“ Now we know you are controlled by a demon! Abraham died. So did the prophets. But you say that whoever obeys your word will never die.

Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you don’t hear is that you don’t belong to God.”The Jews answered Jesus,“ Aren’t we right when we say you are a Samaritan? Aren’t you controlled by a demon?”

The king stood up. The governor and Bernice and those sitting with them stood up too.They left the room and began to talk with one another.“ Why should this man die or be put in prison?” they said.“ He has done nothing worthy of that!”Agrippa said to Festus,“ This man could have been set free. But he has made an appeal to Caesar.”

But the Pharisees said,“ He drives out demons by the power of the prince of demons.”

Paul was about to give reasons for his actions. But just then Gallio spoke to them. He said,“ You Jews don’t claim that Paul has committed a great or small crime. If you did, it would make sense for me to listen to you.But this is about your own law. It is a question of words and names. Settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.”

Then they began to attack him with their words.“ You are this fellow’s disciple!” they said.“ We are disciples of Moses!We know that God spoke to Moses. But we don’t even know where this fellow comes from.”

He was arrested and sentenced to death. Then he was taken away. He was cut off from this life. He was punished for the sins of my people. Who among those who were living at that time tried to stop what was happening?

While Paul was still presenting his case, Festus interrupted.“ You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted.“ Your great learning is driving you crazy!”

“ No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.“ You mean he has fooled you also?” the Pharisees asked.“ Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him?No! But this mob knows nothing about the law. There is a curse on them.”Then Nicodemus, a Pharisee, spoke. He was the one who had gone to Jesus earlier. He asked,“ Does our law find a man guilty without hearing him first? Doesn’t it want to find out what he is doing?”They replied,“ Are you from Galilee too? Look into it. You will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”

It is enough for students to be like their teachers. And it is enough for slaves to be like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, what can the others who live there expect?

Instead, they argued with him about their own beliefs. They didn’t agree about a man named Jesus. They said Jesus was dead, but Paul claimed Jesus was alive.I had no idea how to look into such matters. So I asked Paul if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem. There he could be tried on these charges.
