The voice of one crying in the wilderness:“ Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth;The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

But they said to her,“ There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”So they made signs to his father— what he would have him called.And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying,“ His name is John.” So they all marveled.

But the angel said to him,“ Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

For this is he of whom it is written:‘ Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’

“ And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,and saying,“ Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:“ The voice of one crying in the wilderness:‘ Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’”Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to himand were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,“ Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,and do not think to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The baptism of John— where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And they reasoned among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say to us,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”And with many other exhortations he preached to the people.But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in the Prophets:“ Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.”“ The voice of one crying in the wilderness:‘ Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’”John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.And he preached, saying,“ There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah,‘ to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
