我民女歟、爾其束麻、輾轉灰塵、爾其舉哀、號咷痛哭、若喪獨子、蓋殘賊者將倏然臨我、

殘賊猝至、民必衣麻、坐於塗炭、舉哀甚慘、若喪獨子。

我民歟、當衣麻輾轉於塵埃、舉哀痛哭、若喪獨子、蓋殘殺毀滅者、忽至而攻我儕、

Put on sackcloth, my people, and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

My people, put on the clothes of sadness. Roll among the ashes. Mourn with bitter weeping just as you would mourn for an only son. The one who is going to destroy us will come suddenly.

O daughter of my people, put on sackcloth, and roll in ashes; make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

Oh, my people, dress yourselves in burlap and sit among the ashes. Mourn and weep bitterly, as for the loss of an only son. For suddenly the destroying armies will be upon you!

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

Daughter of my people, put on sackcloth And roll in ashes; Mourn as for an only son, A most bitter mourning. For suddenly the destroyer Will come against us.

O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

O daughter of my people, gird[ thee] with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning,[ as for] an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.

So I said,“ Oh, my dear people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with painful sobs as though you had lost your only child. For any moment now that destructive army will come against us.”

Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

“ And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

For this, clothe yourself with sackcloth, Lament and wail. For the fierce anger of the Lord Has not turned back from us.

They will make their voice heard because of you; They will cry bitterly and cast dust on their heads; They will roll about in ashes;They will shave themselves completely bald because of you, Gird themselves with sackcloth, And weep for you With bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.

The hands of the compassionate women Have cooked their own children; They became food for them In the destruction of the daughter of my people.

The punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people Is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, Which was overthrown in a moment, With no hand to help her!

The plunderers have come On all the desolate heights in the wilderness, For the sword of the Lord shall devour From one end of the land to the other end of the land; No flesh shall have peace.

But if you will not hear it, My soul will weep in secret for your pride; My eyes will weep bitterly And run down with tears, Because the LORD’s flock has been taken captive.

My eyes fail with tears, My heart is troubled; My bile is poured on the ground Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, Because the children and the infants Faint in the streets of the city.

“ Therefore you shall say this word to them:‘ Let my eyes flow with tears night and day, And let them not cease; For the virgin daughter of my people Has been broken with a mighty stroke, with a very severe blow.

For the hurt of the daughter of my people I am hurt. I am mourning; Astonishment has taken hold of me.Is there no balm in Gilead, Is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery For the health of the daughter of my people?Oh, that my head were waters, And my eyes a fountain of tears, That I might weep day and night For the slain of the daughter of my people!

And at that day the slain of the Lord shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall become refuse on the ground.“ Wail, shepherds, and cry! Roll about in the ashes, You leaders of the flock! For the days of your slaughter and your dispersions are fulfilled; You shall fall like a precious vessel.

Destruction upon destruction is cried, For the whole land is plundered. Suddenly my tents are plundered, And my curtains in a moment.

And in that day the Lord GOD of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning, For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, Saying,‘ Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.

Therefore this iniquity shall be to you Like a breach ready to fall, A bulge in a high wall, Whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.

Even the jackals present their breasts To nurse their young; But the daughter of my people is cruel, Like ostriches in the wilderness.

I will turn your feasts into mourning, And all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, And baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, And its end like a bitter day.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!

“ For these things I weep; My eye, my eye overflows with water; Because the comforter, who should restore my life, Is far from me. My children are desolate Because the enemy prevailed.”

My eyes overflow with rivers of water For the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked; I will make a wailing like the jackals And a mourning like the ostriches,For her wounds are incurable. For it has come to Judah; It has come to the gate of My people— To Jerusalem.Tell it not in Gath, Weep not at all; In Beth Aphrah Roll yourself in the dust.

Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas; I will bring against them, Against the mother of the young men, A plunderer at noonday; I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them suddenly.

Therefore I said,“ Look away from me, I will weep bitterly; Do not labor to comfort me Because of the plundering of the daughter of my people.”

She weeps bitterly in the night, Her tears are on her cheeks; Among all her lovers She has none to comfort her. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; They have become her enemies.

At that time it will be said To this people and to Jerusalem,“ A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness Toward the daughter of My people— Not to fan or to cleanse—

Listen! The voice, The cry of the daughter of my people From a far country:“ Is not the Lord in Zion? Is not her King in her?”“ Why have they provoked Me to anger With their carved images— With foreign idols?”

Tremble, you women who are at ease; Be troubled, you complacent ones; Strip yourselves, make yourselves bare, And gird sackcloth on your waists.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Consider and call for the mourning women, That they may come; And send for skillful wailing women, That they may come.Let them make haste And take up a wailing for us, That our eyes may run with tears, And our eyelids gush with water.For a voice of wailing is heard from Zion:‘ How we are plundered! We are greatly ashamed, Because we have forsaken the land, Because we have been cast out of our dwellings.’”Yet hear the word of the Lord, O women, And let your ear receive the word of His mouth; Teach your daughters wailing, And everyone her neighbor a lamentation.For death has come through our windows, Has entered our palaces, To kill off the children— no longer to be outside! And the young men— no longer on the streets!Speak,“ Thus says the Lord:‘ Even the carcasses of men shall fall as refuse on the open field, Like cuttings after the harvester, And no one shall gather them.’”

And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.

I will take up a weeping and wailing for the mountains, And for the dwelling places of the wilderness a lamentation, Because they are burned up, So that no one can pass through; Nor can men hear the voice of the cattle. Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled; They are gone.

‘ Those who survive will escape and be on the mountains Like doves of the valleys, All of them mourning, Each for his iniquity.Every hand will be feeble, And every knee will be as weak as water.They will also be girded with sackcloth; Horror will cover them; Shame will be on every face, Baldness on all their heads.

Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
