Thus says the Lord:“ Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

耶和華曰、當立道旁、訪其舊途、正直者履之、可得平康、人曰、余不欲正直是履。

主曾如是云、爾曹當立道旁以觀、訪其舊途、何為善道則行之、如是可得平康、惟彼云、我儕不欲行、

This is what the Lord says:“ Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

The Lord tells the people of Judah,“ Stand where the roads cross, and look around. Ask where the old paths are. Ask for the good path, and walk on it. Then your hearts will find rest in me. But you said,‘ We won’t walk on it.’

This is what the Lord says:“ Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply,‘ No, that’s not the road we want!’

This is what the LORD says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths,“ Which is the way to what is good?” Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested,“ We won’t!”

This is what the Lord says:“ Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; Then you will find a resting place for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

Thus says the Lord:“ Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

Thus saith Jehovah, Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk therein.

This is what the Lord says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths: Which is the way to what is good? Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested,“ We won’t!”

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where[ is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk[ therein].

The LORD said to his people:“ You are standing at the crossroads. So consider your path. Ask where the old, reliable paths are. Ask where the path is that leads to blessing and follow it. If you do, you will find rest for your souls.” But they said,“ We will not follow it!”

Yahweh says,“ Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths,‘ Where is the good way?’ and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

But my people have forgotten me; they make offerings to false gods; they made them stumble in their ways, in the ancient roads, and to walk into side roads, not the highway,

Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,“ This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

But this command I gave them:‘ Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

“ Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

“ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you.

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,

I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said,‘ I will not listen.’ This has been your way from your youth, that you have not obeyed my voice.

But Abraham said,‘ They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’

“ But they say,‘ That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’

So Jesus said to them,“ The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.

to whom he has said,“ This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose”; yet they would not hear.

so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

For by it the people of old received their commendation.By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son,of whom it was said,“ Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau.By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff.By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.And what more shall I say? Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated—of whom the world was not worthy— wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

“ What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’And he answered,‘ I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went.And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered,‘ I go, sir,’ but did not go.Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.For what does the Scripture say?“ Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said,‘ It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.’

Tell me, you whom my soul loves, where you pasture your flock, where you make it lie down at noon; for why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions?If you do not know, O most beautiful among women, follow in the tracks of the flock, and pasture your young goats beside the shepherds’ tents.

and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
