撒母耳說：「我怎麼能去呢？掃羅一聽見，就會殺我。」耶和華說：「你可以手裏牽一頭小母牛去，說：『我來是要向耶和華獻祭。』你要請耶西來一同獻祭，我會指示你當做的事。我對你說的那個人，你要為我膏他。」撒母耳遵照耶和華的話去做，來到伯利恆，城裏的長老都戰戰兢兢出來迎接他，有人問他說：「你是為平安來的嗎？」他說：「為平安來的，我來是要向耶和華獻祭。你們要使自己分別為聖，來跟我一同獻祭。」撒母耳把耶西和他眾兒子分別為聖，請他們來一同獻祭。

掃羅的叔叔說：「告訴我撒母耳對你們說了些甚麼。」掃羅對他的叔叔說：「他明明告訴我們，驢子已經找到了。」至於撒母耳所說君王的事，掃羅沒有告訴叔叔。
