But now please listen, your royal Majesty, and grant my plea for mercy. Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan, the royal secretary. If you do, I will die there.”

於是，他們拿住耶利米，用繩子把他縋到王子瑪基雅的蓄水池裡。那池子在護衛兵的院子裡，池中沒有水，只有淤泥。耶利米就陷在淤泥中。那時，王正坐在便雅憫門口。宮廷侍臣古實人以伯·米勒聽說他們把耶利米囚在蓄水池裡，便從王宮跑去對王說：「我主我王啊！這些人對耶利米先知太狠毒了。他們把他丟在蓄水池裡，他必餓死在那裡，因為城中絕糧了。」

羅馬官員審訊了我，發現我沒有什麼該死的罪，想釋放我，猶太人卻反對，我不得已只好上訴凱撒。我並非有什麼事要控告自己的同胞。

不過，你們要知道，如果你們置我於死地，你們和這城及城中的居民必擔當濫殺無辜的罪，因為確實是耶和華派我來告訴你們這些預言的。」

保羅的外甥聽到這一陰謀，就去軍營通知保羅。保羅請來一位百夫長，說：「請趕快帶這青年去見千夫長，他有要事稟告！」百夫長領那青年去見千夫長，說：「那囚犯保羅叫我帶這青年來，說有要事稟告。」千夫長就拉著那青年的手走到一旁，私下問他：「你有什麼事要告訴我？」他說：「那些猶太人約好了，要請求你明天帶保羅到公會受審，假裝要詳細審問他的事。你不要答應他們，因為他們有四十多個人會埋伏在半路，並且還起誓說，『不殺保羅就不吃不喝』。他們現在已經準備就緒，就等你答應了。」千夫長聽後，就叫他回去，並叮囑道：「你向我稟告的事，不要告訴別人。」

你可以告訴他們，你是在求我不要把你押回約拿單的房子，以免死在那裡。」

保羅說：「我此刻正站在凱撒的法庭上，這就是我應該受審的地方。你很清楚，我並沒有做過什麼對不起猶太人的事。如果我做錯了，犯了該死的罪，我決不逃避！但他們對我的指控毫無根據，誰也不能把我交給他們。我要向凱撒上訴！」
