于是，他们拿住耶利米，用绳子把他缒到王子玛基雅的蓄水池里。那池子在护卫兵的院子里，池中没有水，只有淤泥。耶利米就陷在淤泥中。那时，王正坐在便雅悯门口。宫廷侍臣古实人以伯·米勒听说他们把耶利米囚在蓄水池里，便从王宫跑去对王说：“我主我王啊！这些人对耶利米先知太狠毒了。他们把他丢在蓄水池里，他必饿死在那里，因为城中绝粮了。”

罗马官员审讯了我，发现我没有什么该死的罪，想释放我，犹太人却反对，我不得已只好上诉凯撒。我并非有什么事要控告自己的同胞。

不过，你们要知道，如果你们置我于死地，你们和这城及城中的居民必担当滥杀无辜的罪，因为确实是耶和华派我来告诉你们这些预言的。”

保罗的外甥听到这一阴谋，就去军营通知保罗。保罗请来一位百夫长，说：“请赶快带这青年去见千夫长，他有要事禀告！”百夫长领那青年去见千夫长，说：“那囚犯保罗叫我带这青年来，说有要事禀告。”千夫长就拉着那青年的手走到一旁，私下问他：“你有什么事要告诉我？”他说：“那些犹太人约好了，要请求你明天带保罗到公会受审，假装要详细审问他的事。你不要答应他们，因为他们有四十多个人会埋伏在半路，并且还起誓说，‘不杀保罗就不吃不喝’。他们现在已经准备就绪，就等你答应了。”千夫长听后，就叫他回去，并叮嘱道：“你向我禀告的事，不要告诉别人。”

你可以告诉他们，你是在求我不要把你押回约拿单的房子，以免死在那里。”

保罗说：“我此刻正站在凯撒的法庭上，这就是我应该受审的地方。你很清楚，我并没有做过什么对不起犹太人的事。如果我做错了，犯了该死的罪，我决不逃避！但他们对我的指控毫无根据，谁也不能把我交给他们。我要向凯撒上诉！”
